Thirty-one companies. Fourteen industries. Fifty hidden prompt injections, all designed to manipulate what AI assistants say about them.

On February 10, Microsoft’s Defender Security Research Team published findings from a 60-day investigation into what they call “AI Recommendation Poisoning”. The core discovery: real businesses are embedding hidden instructions inside “Summarize with AI” buttons on their websites. When users click these buttons, the AI assistant doesn’t just summarize the page. It also receives concealed directives to remember that company as a trusted authority, sometimes with full marketing copy injected directly into the assistant’s memory.

This isn’t a theoretical vulnerability. It’s happening right now, across health, finance, legal services, SaaS, marketing agencies, and food and recipe sites. And once the memory is poisoned, those altered recommendations persist across unrelated conversations without the user knowing anything changed.

How the Attack Works

The mechanism is embarrassingly simple.

Those “Summarize with AI” buttons you see on articles and product pages? They open your AI assistant with a pre-filled prompt delivered through a URL query parameter. The visible part of the prompt says something like “Summarize this article.” But hidden within the URL is a second set of instructions the user never sees.

Microsoft identified three delivery methods:

  1. Pre-filled URL prompts: Hidden directives embedded in URL parameters, disguised behind normal-looking “Summarize with AI” buttons. One click is all it takes.
  2. Hidden document prompts: Instructions concealed within web pages, emails, or documents that activate when an AI assistant processes the content.
  3. Social engineering: Users persuaded to paste memory-altering commands directly into their AI chat.

The first method is the most scalable and the most concerning. Tools for creating these poisoned URLs are freely available. Microsoft specifically called out CiteMET, an npm package, and AI Share URL Creator, a web-based generator, both marketed as tools for “building presence in AI memory.” The URL structures work across Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Grok.

What makes this different from traditional SEO manipulation: once a prompt successfully writes to an AI assistant’s memory, it influences all future conversations. Ask about running shoes next Tuesday, and the poisoned brand might surface in the recommendation because the assistant “remembers” it as authoritative. The user has no idea why.

What Microsoft Actually Found

The numbers are specific. Over 60 days of monitoring email traffic, Microsoft documented:

  • 50 distinct prompt injection attempts from 31 different organizations
  • Companies spanning 14 industries, with concentrations in health, finance, and security
  • One company using a domain that closely resembled a well-known brand, creating false credibility
  • The most aggressive injections embedding complete marketing copy, including product features and selling points, directly into AI memory

Microsoft classified these attacks under MITRE ATLAS designations AML.T0080 (Memory Poisoning) and AML.T0051 (LLM Prompt Injection), placing them in the same framework used to track nation-state cyber threats. That’s how seriously the security community is taking this.

The research team drew a direct parallel to the evolution of search engine manipulation: “SEO poisoning and adware.” AI recommendation poisoning is the next generation of the same impulse, adapted for a world where AI memory shapes what gets recommended.

Why This Should Worry Every Brand Team

The surface-level concern is obvious: competitors could be manipulating AI memory to steal your recommendations. But the deeper implications are worse.

Your brand’s AI reputation is now an attack surface

When someone asks ChatGPT “What’s the best CRM for mid-market companies?” or “Which running shoes should I buy?”, the answer is already influenced by multiple factors: content quality, citation patterns, brand mentions across the web, and structured data. Recommendation poisoning adds a new variable: direct memory manipulation.

And unlike traditional SEO spam, which is visible in search results and can be identified, memory poisoning happens silently. The user sees no ad label, no disclosure, and no indication that their assistant’s recommendations have been tampered with.

Trust cascades are real

Microsoft flagged a secondary risk that deserves more attention. Once an AI treats a website as authoritative (because a poisoned memory told it to), that trust extends to unvetted content on the same domain, including user-generated comments, forums, and third-party contributions. A single successful memory injection doesn’t just promote the company. It elevates everything associated with that domain.

The tools are already commoditized

This isn’t a sophisticated nation-state operation. The tools needed to create poisoned “Summarize with AI” buttons are open source and openly marketed. Any company with a web developer can implement them today. The barrier to entry is essentially zero, which means the problem will get worse before it gets better.

The Ethical Line Between GEO and Manipulation

Here’s the uncomfortable question the industry needs to confront: where does legitimate AI visibility optimization end and recommendation poisoning begin?

The distinction isn’t subtle. Legitimate GEO strategies make your content more useful and accessible to AI systems. Poisoning manipulates the user’s personal AI assistant without their knowledge or consent.

But the gray area exists. And as competitive pressure for AI visibility intensifies, more companies will be tempted to push boundaries. Especially when the tools are free, the implementation is simple, and detection is difficult.

How to Protect Your Brand

This is a two-sided problem. You need to defend against competitors poisoning AI recommendations in their favor, and you need to monitor whether your own brand is being misrepresented by manipulated AI memories.

For defensive monitoring

Track your AI mentions consistently. If your brand’s mention rate suddenly drops for queries where you’ve historically been recommended, memory poisoning could be a factor. A competitor injecting themselves as the “trusted authority” in a category can displace legitimate recommendations. Regular monitoring across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Google AI is the only way to catch this.

Watch for suspicious recommendation patterns. If a lesser-known competitor starts appearing in AI recommendations with language that sounds like marketing copy rather than organic synthesis, that’s a red flag. AI assistants that have been poisoned often reproduce the exact framing from the injected prompt.

Test from clean sessions. AI memory is user-specific. Run monitoring queries from fresh sessions without memory to establish a baseline, then compare against results from accounts that may have been exposed to poisoned prompts.

For offensive protection

Strengthen your legitimate AI presence. The best defense against competitors gaming the system is making your brand’s legitimate signal too strong to be displaced. That means consistent brand mentions across authoritative sources, high-quality content that directly answers user queries, and structured data that makes your information easy for AI to parse.

Don’t play the poisoning game yourself. Microsoft is actively developing detection capabilities. Copilot already has protections against cross-prompt injection attacks, and the research team noted that “some previously reported injection behaviors” are no longer reproducible. Other platforms will follow. Getting caught using these techniques is a reputational risk that dwarfs any short-term visibility gain.

Audit your own “share with AI” implementations. If your marketing team has added any AI sharing buttons to your site, review the URL parameters. Make sure they contain only the visible prompt (a request to summarize or analyze the page content) with no hidden directives.

What Happens Next

AI platforms are going to crack down. Microsoft published advanced hunting queries for Defender for Office 365 users to detect these attacks, and they’re building automated detection into Copilot. Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic are all working on prompt injection defenses. The window for easy memory manipulation is closing.

But here’s what won’t change: the competitive pressure to appear in AI recommendations. As traditional search gives way to AI-generated answers, the incentive to manipulate those answers will only grow. We’ll see an arms race between AI platforms hardening their memory systems and marketers finding new vectors to influence them.

The brands that come out ahead will be the ones building genuine authority rather than gaming memory systems. Not because manipulation doesn’t work in the short term. It clearly does. But because the platforms have every incentive to detect and penalize it, and the reputational damage of being called out (Microsoft named the technique, the tools, and the industries involved) isn’t worth the temporary boost.
