Three percent. That’s the median citation rate for enterprise B2B brands in AI-generated search answers, according to Walker Sands’ B2B AI Search Visibility Benchmark, published April 1, 2026. The firm analyzed 45 million keywords across 828 enterprise B2B companies spanning 14 technology industries. The typical brand ranked for 9,700 keywords but got cited in just 3% of AI answers where it was relevant.

Meanwhile, Forrester’s 2026 buyer research found that generative AI tools are now the single most cited interaction type B2B buyers use when researching purchases. Not vendor websites. Not analyst reports. AI chatbots.

Your buyers are asking ChatGPT about your category. ChatGPT doesn’t mention you. That’s the problem.

The gap is wider than you think

AI Overviews now appear on roughly 48% of all Google search queries, up 58% from a year ago. In B2B tech specifically, that number hit 82%, according to Search Engine Journal’s industry analysis. That means four out of five searches your buyers run for terms like “best ERP for mid-market manufacturing” or “cloud security compliance platform” now include an AI-generated answer above the organic results.

Your brand probably doesn’t appear in that answer.

The Walker Sands data makes this concrete. A company might rank on page one for hundreds of relevant queries, yet the AI Overview cites someone else entirely. The 3% figure means that out of every 100 AI answers where your product is genuinely relevant, you show up in three. And 4.6% of the companies studied never appeared in a single AI answer for any of their tracked keywords.

Traditional search ranking and AI citation are measuring two different things. Ranking tells Google your page matches a query. Citation tells an AI model your content is worth quoting in a synthesized answer. That second bar is higher, and most B2B content doesn’t clear it.

Why B2B content fails the AI citation test

B2B websites are built to convert, not to inform. That design choice worked fine when Google sent traffic to landing pages. It breaks down when an AI model scans your site for quotable information.

Here’s what typically goes wrong:

Gated content starves the model. Your best research sits behind email forms. AI crawlers can’t fill out a form. They see the gate, move on, and cite the competitor who published similar findings on an open blog post. The content you spent six figures producing is invisible to the channel where buyers now start their research.

Product pages describe features, not categories. AI models answering “best project management tool for remote teams” need content that explains what makes a tool good for remote teams, compares options, and names specific criteria. A product page that says “Acme PM: Built for Modern Teams” with a feature grid and a demo button doesn’t give the model anything to quote.

Thought leadership stays vague. B2B blogs love sentences like “organizations must embrace digital transformation to remain competitive.” An AI model can’t extract a useful claim from that. It needs specifics: what changed, by how much, according to whom, and what someone should do about it.

Third-party presence is thin. We’ve written about how 64% of AI citations come from third-party sources, not from the brand’s own website. B2B companies that rely on owned channels alone leave most of the citation opportunity untouched. The brands that show up in AI answers appear in analyst reports, industry publications, comparison sites, and community discussions. Not just their own blog.

What B2B buyers actually do with AI

Forrester’s data paints a specific picture of how AI fits into B2B purchasing. The typical buying group now includes 13 internal stakeholders and nine external influencers. When the purchase involves AI features, that group doubles. These aren’t casual searches. They’re structured evaluation processes where multiple people query AI tools at different stages.

At every stage, the AI model assembles an answer from whatever sources it can find. If your company produces content that only serves the bottom of this funnel (product pages and demo CTAs), you’re absent from the first three stages where shortlists get built.

And here’s the part that should worry B2B marketers most: 36% of buyers told Forrester they felt more confident in their decision because of AI, while 20% felt less confident because they hit inaccurate information. Buyers trust these tools enough to act on what they find. If AI recommends three competitors and omits you, that omission carries weight.

The content that gets cited

Conductor’s 2026 AEO/GEO Benchmarks Report analyzed 3.3 billion sessions across 13,000 domains. One stat stands out for B2B: the Information Technology sector leads all industries with 2.80% AI referral traffic, and that traffic converts at 2x the rate of traditional organic search.

The brands earning that traffic share patterns you can reverse-engineer:

They publish open, specific, data-backed content. Not gated whitepapers. Blog posts and resource pages that name numbers, explain methodology, and provide frameworks anyone can apply. AI models prefer content they can extract a discrete claim from. A sentence like “Our survey of 500 IT leaders found that 62% migrated at least one workload to a second cloud provider last year” gives a model something to quote. “Many organizations are adopting multi-cloud” does not.

They answer category questions, not just product questions. The highest-cited B2B content tends to be educational: “What is [category],” “How to evaluate [solution type],” “[Use case] best practices.” This content gets quoted at the problem identification and solution exploration stages, which is exactly where traditional B2B marketing has the weakest presence.

They exist across multiple sources. We’ve covered how AI platforms diverge in their citation sources: ChatGPT leans on Wikipedia and authoritative references, Perplexity pulls from Reddit and community forums, Google AI Overviews spreads citations across a wider mix. A B2B brand that only publishes on its own domain is optimizing for one citation pathway while ignoring the others.

They structure content for extraction. The queries that drive AI citations aren’t the keywords humans type. AI models generate their own retrieval queries. Content that uses clear headings, direct answers in opening sentences, comparison tables, and named frameworks gives the model clean extraction points. Dense paragraphs of marketing copy don’t.

A six-week plan for B2B teams

Most B2B companies can’t overhaul their content strategy overnight. But six weeks is enough to run a focused experiment and measure whether your AI citation rate improves.

Week 1-2: Audit and prioritize. Pick 20 high-intent queries where you rank organically but don’t appear in AI answers. Run those queries through ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode. Note who does get cited and what their content looks like. This tells you exactly what the gap is between your content and the content that wins.

Week 3-4: Create or restructure five pages. For each page, follow these rules:

  • Answer the query directly in the first 100 words
  • Include at least one data point with a named source
  • Add a comparison table or decision framework
  • Use headings that match how AI models phrase grounding queries
  • Remove gates. If it’s behind a form, AI can’t see it

Week 5-6: Distribute and monitor. Publish at least two pieces through third-party channels: a contributed article to an industry publication, a detailed answer on a relevant community forum, or a LinkedIn article that covers your framework. Then track whether your citation rate moves.

This isn’t the whole strategy. But it’s enough to prove the concept to your leadership team with real data.

The window is closing, slowly

B2B has been slower to react to AI search than consumer brands. That’s partly because B2B buying cycles are longer and harder to attribute, and partly because most B2B marketing teams are still measured on pipeline and MQLs rather than AI share of voice.

But the Walker Sands number should reframe the urgency. When AI Overviews appear on 82% of B2B tech queries and your brand shows up in 3% of the answers, you’re not competing on a level field. You’re absent from the field. The brands that punch above their weight in AI search aren’t the biggest. They’re the ones producing content that AI models can actually use.

Three percent is not a crisis. It’s an opportunity, because most of your competitors are stuck there too. The first B2B brands in each category to take AI visibility seriously will own a disproportionate share of the citations, the referral traffic, and the shortlist spots that come with them.
