ChatGPT Stopped Asking the Crowd. It Started Asking Your Website Directly.
On August 8 ChatGPT began running site: searches at scale. Reddit lost 86% of its citations in a week. Official sources won. What changed and what to do now.
ChatGPT stopped asking the crowd. It started asking your website directly.
In April, Reddit was the single most-cited domain in ChatGPT Search at 4.14% of all citations (Forbes). By August 17 it was at 0.52%. Nobody at OpenAI announced anything. No blog post, no changelog line, no comment when reporters asked.
The Reddit headline is the part everyone is sharing. It’s also the least useful part. What happened underneath is a change in how ChatGPT searches the web, and that change touched every category of source. Reddit was one casualty among several. If you’ve spent the last year buying into the “get mentioned on Reddit” playbook for ChatGPT, this is the week to reread your strategy doc.
What the trackers saw
Promptwatch, which monitors AI answers through the real chat interface rather than the API, published the timeline (Promptwatch). Two dates matter.
August 8: ChatGPT’s search behavior changed. The share of its fan-out queries using the site: operator jumped from 0.37% to 16.8% in a single day, a 46x increase. The average number of searches per response went from about 1.08 to about 1.83. A change that sharp, in one day, is a rollout, not drift.
August 14: Reddit’s citation share fell off a cliff. From a steady 3.83% average across July 18 to August 7, it dropped to 0.52% for August 14 through 17. An 86.4% relative decline, in four days.
A second tracker, Qwairy, ran the same period on its own panel and got the same shape with different absolute numbers (Qwairy). Reddit went from 2.05% on August 1 to 0.07% on August 14, in two steps: roughly halved on August 8, then near-zero on the 14th. Every brand in their cohort lost more than half its Reddit citations. The median loss was 97.9%.
So this wasn’t one vendor’s counting glitch. Two independent panels, same week, same story.
It wasn’t a Reddit penalty
This is where most of the coverage stops, and where it gets interesting. Qwairy broke out the citation share by source category, before and after (Qwairy):
| Source category | Before | After | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Institutional (.gov, .edu, .org) | 17.1% | 29.6% | +73% |
| 3.9% | 0.08% | -98% | |
| Press and media | 3.6% | 0.6% | -82% |
| Forums and other UGC | 3.2% | 0.9% | -70% |
| Business directories | 2.3% | 0.2% | -93% |
Read past the Reddit row. News sites lost 82%. Directories lost 93%. Forums that aren’t Reddit lost 70%. The one category that grew is the one made of official, primary, institutional sources.
That pattern matches the mechanism. When ChatGPT runs a generic web search, it gets back whatever ranks: a Reddit thread, a G2 listing, a trade-press roundup, your site. When it runs site:yourcompany.com pricing, it gets back your pricing page. A site: query can’t return a Reddit thread unless the model chose to target Reddit. It didn’t. Promptwatch notes the site-scoped searches are layered on top of the generic ones, not swapped in for them (Promptwatch), which is why searches per response nearly doubled. ChatGPT is still asking the open web what it thinks. It’s now also going straight to the source and asking it directly. And when both come back, the direct answer wins the citation.
In plain terms: ChatGPT used to ask the crowd about you. Now it checks your website.
The honest caveats
I’d be doing you a disservice if I sold this as fully understood. It isn’t.
The timing doesn’t line up cleanly. The site: change landed August 8. The Reddit cliff landed August 14. Search Engine Journal pointed at that six-day gap and argued the fan-out explanation, on its own, doesn’t account for the second drop (Search Engine Journal). Promptwatch itself says it can’t yet rule out a data-collection issue. Something else may have shipped on the 14th, or the two-step pattern Qwairy saw may reflect a staged rollout. We don’t know.
There’s precedent for getting this wrong, too. Reddit’s ChatGPT citations cratered once before, in September 2025. Kevin Indig traced that one to Google killing its num=100 search parameter, which cut off the deep results where Reddit threads live, rather than to anything OpenAI or Reddit did. The lesson from that episode: a citation collapse can be an artifact of the plumbing, not a verdict on the source.
And Reddit’s own position is worth hearing. A spokesperson told Gizmodo the site remains one of the most-cited domains in other trackers’ reports and that Reddit gets most of its visits directly and from traditional search, so the drop has “no meaningful impact” on its business (Forbes). Q2 revenue was up 61% to $805 million. Reddit is fine. The question is whether your GEO plan is.
Google didn’t flinch
The clearest evidence that this is a ChatGPT decision, not a Reddit problem, is what the other engines did over the same window (Promptwatch).
| Engine | Reddit share, early period | Reddit share, final week | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Search | 3.83% | 0.52% | -86.4% (single-day cliff) |
| Google AI Mode | 2.22% | 1.54% | -30.5% (gradual) |
| Google AI Overviews | 2.37% | 2.10% | -11.3% (gradual) |
Google is moving the other way. In May it started labeling Reddit and forum quotes as “Expert Advice” inside AI Mode. Its Reddit share is drifting down slowly, but there’s no cliff, and its product decisions keep pulling community content forward. ChatGPT just walked away from it in a week.
This is the part that should worry anyone running a single, engine-agnostic “AI visibility” program. The engines aren’t converging on a shared idea of what counts as a good source. They’re diverging. What Google treats as expert advice, ChatGPT now treats as noise. The same Reddit thread is an asset on one platform and close to worthless on another, as of this month.
What this means for your program
The uncomfortable version first. A lot of GEO budgets in 2026 went into engineered Reddit presence: seeded threads, paid AMAs, agency-run “community” accounts, the whole apparatus. For ChatGPT, that investment lost most of its citation value between August 8 and August 14, with no notice. The same goes for directory listings and press-release-driven media pickups, which lost 93% and 82% of their share on the Qwairy panel.
Steve Rubel at Burson put it well in Axios: don’t pin your GEO hopes on one “mythical unicorn,” because channels will rise and fall based on citation behavior you don’t control (Axios). That’s true. But it’s also a bit too comfortable. “Diversify” is what you say when you don’t want to name what to do. Let me try to be more specific.
First, your own domain is now a primary retrieval target in ChatGPT. When a model runs site:yourbrand.com plus a question, the answer either exists on a crawlable page or it doesn’t. Pricing, integrations, comparisons, “does it work with X,” limits and quotas, security posture. If those answers live in a sales deck or a gated PDF, ChatGPT will run the query, find nothing, and cite a competitor whose help center has it. Check that OAI-SearchBot can reach those pages. This is the moment the “answer the question on your own site” advice stopped being generic and started being literal.
Second, institutional corroboration counts for more than it did two weeks ago. The +73% for .gov, .edu and .org sources is the largest single move in the data. Standards bodies, industry associations, university research, government registries. If your category has any of those, being named in them now carries weight in ChatGPT that a hundred Reddit mentions no longer do.
Third, stop measuring in aggregate. A blended “AI visibility score” across engines would have shown a mild dip this month while your ChatGPT presence was being rebuilt from a different set of sources. You need per-engine citation data, by source category, to even see this happen. Promptwatch’s own advice is to pull your cited Reddit URLs before and after August 14, check GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot logs after August 8, and rerun your fan-out analysis because the sub-queries changed.
Fourth, don’t torch the Reddit program. Google still rewards it, and ChatGPT’s retrieval logic has flipped before and could flip again. The September 2025 collapse partly recovered. Treat community presence as a Google and Perplexity asset with an uncertain ChatGPT payoff, and budget it that way.
The deeper point
We already knew ChatGPT swaps out most of its cited domains every week. This is something different: not churn within a stable set of rules, but a change to the rules, shipped silently, over a weekend. It shifted citation share away from the earned and social sources most brands have spent two years courting and toward primary sources, in a matter of days.
That’s the real risk profile of AI search visibility. You aren’t ranking against competitors on a fixed algorithm. You’re standing on a retrieval pipeline that can be rewired overnight by a product team that doesn’t publish release notes. The only defense is to watch it continuously, by engine, by source, and to notice on August 9 instead of reading about it on August 20.
