Two versions of ChatGPT. Same prompt. Completely different answers about who to trust.

A Writesonic study published in March 2026 ran 50 prompts through both GPT-5.3 (the free default) and GPT-5.4 (the paid thinking model), then tracked every search query, web result, and citation each model produced. The results broke something most GEO strategies take for granted: the idea that “ChatGPT” is a single channel you can optimize for.

It’s not. It’s two channels with almost nothing in common.

The numbers

GPT-5.4 cited brand websites in 56% of its responses. GPT-5.3 cited brand websites 8% of the time. That’s a 7x gap between the model your paying customers use and the model everyone else uses.

The study analyzed 532 fan-out queries, 7,896 web results, and 1,161 citations across 74,478 words of response text. And the divergence ran deeper than citation rates.

That last row matters. On comparison queries — “X vs Y vs Z” — GPT-5.3 never cited a single brand. Not once. GPT-5.4 cited brands in nearly every response.

How GPT-5.4 actually searches

The two models don’t just prefer different sources. They search in fundamentally different ways.

GPT-5.3 fires off one broad query, gets roughly 27 results, and pulls from whatever ranks highest. That usually means editorial roundups, review sites, and listicles, the same content formats that dominate AI citations overall. The brand itself rarely shows up because third-party articles outrank brand pages on generic queries.

GPT-5.4 does something no previous ChatGPT model did. It breaks a single user prompt into an average of 8.5 sub-queries. And 156 of those 423 total queries used site: operators — restricting searches to specific brand domains. It reads pricing pages, feature pages, and comparison pages directly from the source.

Think about what that means. When a ChatGPT Plus subscriber asks “which CRM should I use for a 50-person sales team,” GPT-5.4 doesn’t just scan Bing for roundup articles. It goes to Salesforce’s site. HubSpot’s site. Pipedrive’s site. It reads their feature pages and pricing tables, then builds an answer from primary sources.

GPT-5.3 reads G2 reviews and Forbes listicles and tells you what other people said.

Why the overlap is almost zero

Across all 50 prompts, the average citation overlap between the two models was 7%. On 22 of those prompts, the overlap was exactly zero — they cited completely different sources for the same question.

This breaks every GEO report that treats “ChatGPT visibility” as one number. A brand could appear in 80% of GPT-5.4 responses and 0% of GPT-5.3 responses for identical queries. Or the reverse: a media outlet could dominate GPT-5.3 citations and get ignored by GPT-5.4 entirely.

If you’re tracking AI visibility across platforms, you now need to track across models within the same platform too.

Who this helps (and who it hurts)

Brands with clear, well-structured websites win under GPT-5.4. When the model sends site:yourdomain.com queries, it finds whatever you’ve published. If your pricing page is clear, your feature comparisons are honest, and your content answers questions directly, GPT-5.4 will cite you.

Brands that relied on third-party coverage lose their advantage with GPT-5.4. All those sponsored listicles, affiliate roundups, and “best X tools” articles? GPT-5.4 skips right past them. It goes to the source.

But GPT-5.3 still matters — a lot. The free tier has far more users than the paid tier. And GPT-5.3 still works the old way: editorial sources that rank well in search, strong backlink profiles, content depth, structured formatting. So the answer isn’t “pick one model to optimize for.” It’s “understand that each model rewards different content.”

What to do about it

For GPT-5.4 visibility (paid users)

Make your website the best source about your own product. This sounds obvious. It isn’t. Most brand sites are built to convert, not to inform. GPT-5.4 is looking for pages that answer questions clearly — not landing pages stuffed with CTAs.

Specific moves:

  • Build comparison pages that honestly stack you against competitors. Include feature tables, pricing differences, and use-case recommendations. GPT-5.4 reads these directly.
  • Publish a pricing page with real numbers, not “contact us for pricing.” The model can’t cite what it can’t find.
  • Create FAQ sections with genuine questions and direct answers. GPT-5.4 breaks prompts into sub-queries, and those sub-queries often match FAQ-style questions.
  • Keep product pages updated. GPT-5.4 checks “last modified” signals. Stale content gets filtered out.

For GPT-5.3 visibility (free users)

Win the editorial layer. GPT-5.3 still pulls from third-party content, so your brand needs to appear in the roundups, reviews, and listicles that dominate its citations.

This is where earned media strategy pays off. Get reviewed. Get listed. Get mentioned in the articles that GPT-5.3 already trusts.

Monitor both. Seriously. A single “ChatGPT visibility score” now hides two completely different stories about your brand. You need to know what each model says when someone asks about your category — because those answers will be different.

The bigger picture

This isn’t just a ChatGPT quirk. It’s a preview of where all AI search is heading.

As models get smarter, they’ll spend less time relying on intermediary content and more time going directly to primary sources. GPT-5.4’s site: operator behavior is the early signal. Google’s AI Mode — which already produces 93% zero-click searches — shows the same pattern from the other direction: users don’t click through because the AI already pulled the answer from your site.

The intermediary layer of review sites and roundup posts won’t disappear. But its role is shifting from “the answer” to “one input among many.” Brands that own their narrative on their own domains, with content that’s clear and well-structured, will capture more AI citations as models continue to evolve.

For now, though, the GPT-5.3/5.4 split creates an immediate, measurable gap. And most teams don’t even know it exists.
